József Francz, a master mason of Eger who worked as murariorum magister on the building of the Lyceum, bought a house here in 1779. In 1780 he rebuilt it into a small palace bearing the characteristic features of the Lyceum's façade. On 8 March 1790 the town magistrate dealt with József Francz's building plan.
In 1831 the building belonged to József Francz Jr., and later to the Galambos family. It is very likely that the famous cinematographer György Illés (1914–2006), twice awarded the Kossuth Prize and later rector of the University of Theatre and Film Arts, was born in this house at number 7 on 2 November 1914. Among others, he was the cinematographer of the films Budapesti tavasz, Ház a sziklák alatt, Húsz óra, Isten hozta, őrnagy úr! and Az ötödik pecsét. In 1995 György Illés was made an honorary citizen of Eger.
